In 1821, Florida became a part of the United States.
Leon County was created in 1824.
It was named for the
Juan Ponce de Leon, spanish explorer and conquistador who was the first European to reach Florida in April 02, 1513.
The Plantations in Leon County in the 1820s through 1850s
became a destination for a number of early settlers,
planters and their slaves.
The Antibellum Leon County was the cotton kingdom
until the Civil War.
Wakulla County was created out of Leon County in 1843.
